Dear Go player,

It has been some time since I last sent you an email from the Go Center. We have had some issues with our IT department (me) having to do with both time and weirdness. However, we hope to have put most of those issues behind us and look forward to keeping you better informed about happenings in the Seattle, Pacific Northwest, and US Go scene.

----- Note! ----

This weekend.s ratings tournament has been cancelled due to the Roy Hayashi Memorial Tournament at Pacific Luther University in Tacoma. Joining me at the tournament will be Jang Bi, Matthew Burrall, Steve Burrall, and Jin Chen. Who else might be coming? This tournament will consist of five rounds. Three on Saturday; two on Sunday. Registration is from 9:00 to 9:45 AM on Saturday.

There is also a slight modification to the schedule at the Go Center this Sunday. Dan Cooper will be hosting from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday.

----- Upcoming events! ----

Guo Juan workshop - 31-May-2008 to 01-June-2008

Guo Juan returns for another workshop. Start time will be 9:00 AM on both Saturday and Sunday. Cost for the workshop is $60 if you have a lifetime membership, yearly membership or are a youth. For all others, the cost is $90.

Jiang Mingjiu one day workshop . 26-July-2008

Before Mingjiu tricks Daniel Smith into doing another 1,000 push ups at the Go Camp in Tacoma, he will be stopping by the Go Center to give a one day workshop. Start time will be 10:00 AM. Cost for this workshop is $25 for Lifetime, Yearly and Youth members. $30 for all others.

Where is the Ladder

Starting on May 11th, the Kyu class will commence with a 4 week series on Where is the Ladder? When teaching beginners, as many of you already know, I tell them that the ladder is the most important shape in the game of Go and that you will find it everywhere. Well during this 4 week series I hope to share some of the ladders that you may not be aware of. I hope you can join me for what I think will be among my best series of lectures for the Kyu class.

---- Go Props ---

There are many people that help out at the Go Center and make the community what it is. So today, I will tell you about some of the people contributing to the Go Center. Please, this is not an exhaustive list so don.t be surprised if your name shows up in a future email from the Go Center.

Deborah Neidermeyer - Deborah, a Board membe, has put in an enormous amount of work in our attempt to get 501 c(3) status for the Go Center. We still do not have a ruling from the IRS but we have come a long way and hope to have some good news for the community in the next six months. It is due to her prodigious efforts that this is going to happen.

Elly Leaverton - Elly, though a double digit kyu, has a great passion for teaching new people how to play the game of Go. She has been a constant figure out our outreaches at Sakura Con and the Cherry Blossom Festival.

Scott Arnold - Due to my constricted time of late, Scott has been a great asset for the Seattle Go Center. His long standing in the community, strong understanding of how things work, and vast teaching experience are appreciated.

---- Membership Drive ---

During the month of May, you should be receiving email from either Scott or I. During this month it is the Goal of the Seattle Go Center to add 50 new yearly members to our rolls. If you have ever considered being a member of the Go Center, this would be a great time to do so. A yearly membership costs $200 and, in addition to saving money on various events, gives you actual voting rights at our yearly membership meeting held every March.

There is more to say, but this missive has already started to meander so let me close be saying how much the Go Center appreciates your support,
